characters coming to life
one of the texts i’ve really enjoyed studying in university is Six Characters in Search of an Author which is a brilliant play by Italian playwright Pirandello. it is about six characters appearing suddenly on a theatre set during a rehearsal, with a request for the manager to listen to their story and allow them to renact their lives on stage. they are characters, so technically their story...

after life, kore-eda hirokazu (1998)
definitely one of my favourite films this year. set in a place between death and ‘heaven’, the newly deceased are told to select their favourite memory to bring into the next world. caseworkers in this facility then attempt to recreate this memory on film for each soul. it is part documentary and part fiction - kore-eda allowed his actors and actresses to recount their own memories...
